What is Cultural Literacy?
Definition: "knowledge of history, contributions, andperspectives of different cultural groups, includingone's own group, necessary for understanding of reading, writing, and other media" (dictionary.com).
Cultural literacy is the ability to understand your own culture, as well as others, and to appreciate differences. Being culturally literate means you can understand and connect your culture with others, whether it is similar or different. Cultural literacy is in everyday life, it is in books, the media, conversations, among many other places. Each student brings their own unique thinking to the classroom, and their cultural literacy plays a role in their thinking and understanding. We cannot assume everyone comes to school with the same ideas, and we must create classrooms that appreciate, celebrate and express differences in cultures.
